Walking through our produce section, we know you’re making a lot of choices. You want the absolute best for your health, but you’re also keeping an eye on your grocery budget. We get it, we’re shoppers, too! The “Organic vs. Conventional” debate doesn’t have to be an all-or-nothing struggle. It’s about balance, and at The Patch, we’re here to help you find it.

Since 1987, when our founder, Mr. Amort, started this journey, we’ve been dedicated to the idea that food is medicine. We aren’t just a grocery store; we’re a community resource. Our team does the heavy lifting by researching ingredients and farming practices so you can shop with total peace of mind. If you’re looking to prioritize your spending where it matters most, here is our friendly guide to navigating the bins.

Why Organic is Worth the Hype

For us, organic is about more than just a label on a pear. It’s about the big picture. Organic standards prohibit the use of synthetic pesticides, certain fertilizers, and genetic modifications. But beyond the science, it’s about respect; respect for the soil, the water, and the biodiversity of our planet.

When you choose organic, you’re investing in sustainable agriculture, which we believe is the future of world food production. Many of our neighbors shop organic to minimize the synthetic chemicals they ingest, while others do it to support farmers who treat the earth with kindness. Whatever your “why” is, we’re here to support it.

The “Skin” Rule: What to Always Buy Organic

If you’re wondering where to start, we usually recommend a simple rule of thumb to our Patch family: If you eat the skin, go organic. Fruits and vegetables with thin, porous skins tend to absorb and retain the highest levels of pesticide residue.

We suggest prioritizing your organic budget for these items:

  • The Berry Family: Strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries have tiny pores that are impossible to truly “peel” or scrub clean. Strawberries, in particular, are often at the top of the list for pesticide intensity, so going organic here is a smart move.
  • Leafy Greens: Spinach, kale, and mustard greens have a lot of surface area for residues to cling to. Even frozen spinach can carry these risks, so we always keep a wide variety of organic greens ready for your morning smoothie.
  • Stone Fruits & Apples: Peaches, nectarines, and cherries have delicate skins that don’t offer much protection from sprays. Apples are also frequently treated with waxes that can trap chemicals beneath the surface, making the organic version a much cleaner bite.

Smart Savings: When Conventional is Okay

You can still eat a nutrient-dense, incredible diet on a budget! Some produce comes with its own “natural armor.” For items with thick, protective outer layers, such as avocados, pineapples, onions, corn, and cantaloupe, the edible part is well-shielded from the elements. These are great spots to save a few dollars by opting for conventional versions. These crops often require fewer pesticides to stay healthy anyway, making them a “safe bet” for your cart.
